BMX Frame History 1990-99

1990
This was probably one of the lowest years for freestyle. Rumors that the AFA is beginning to go under emerge. Rider turnout is low. Ramp riders are competing in 2-Hip contests. The NBL tries to take over the freestyle contest scene but was not succesful. The ABA puts on its first King Of Dirt at San Antonio, TX. on january 28. The first York jam is held in York, PA. august 18.

Joe Johnson does double tailwhip, Jay Miron Boomerang Airs and Matt Hofman attempts a backflip fakie on a quarter pipe during a competition in France. It was the first time he ever did it in public. He did it totally unannoinced and blew the minds of everyone. It was his last trick of the day. Matt Hoffman also pulls his first flair in Public at a demo in England.

Some riders had skateboard bearings attached to the end of their bars for rolling. One advantage was you didn’t have to worry about your bars scraping the ground when leaning too far forward on hitchhikers. Brake Tape is a new item introduced. It attached to your brake levers an provided extra traction, comfort and style. ACS BOA (ball bearing brakes), Havok sprocket pocket, Kore removable bashguard and Mongoose Hooligan are introduced.

1991
Vidéos Dorkin IV et Head First.

Competitions were scarce, and magazines were folding over. The magazines that were around were getting thinner and thinner. The one magazine that manages through it all was BMX frame Plus.
First issue of BMX frame Now in the UK.

Worlds à Aalborg au Dannemark du 8 au 11 août, Simon Tabron y rentre son premier 900

Rick Moliterno, Kurt Schmidt et Bill Nitchke are starting Standard Bykes in Davenport Iowa (november)

1992
Freestyle is still in a slump, but some new components are introduced. Standard Industries introduces the Lengthy and Shorty frame and a new thinking behind freestyle frames (make them strong, make them last but don’t worry too much about weight). They also release much bigger bolt on pegs. Matt Hoffman starts Hoffman bikes. First S&M Pitchforks are available.

Matt Hoffman introduced the BS Contest series. BS was short for Bicycle Stunt. It was much more informal than the AFA contest were. The rules were not as strict and there was a nice Pro Purse for the winner. It was similar to the AFA contest, but it included street in addition to ramp and flatland. These contests were a success. It was reviving what was a stagnant 2 years in the freestyle world. Hoffman was bringing things back to life with his new line of bikes and contests.

March 1992 is the last issue of Go. In october 1992, Invert became Ride BMX frame UK and Ride BMX frame US magazine is introduced. It was better than BMX frame Plus! for the average freestyler because it was developed and owned by riders. It was all freestyle and jumping. There was also more freedom to advertise in here.

Mat Hoffman sets highest air record clearing 20 feet above 21 foot tall quarter pipe

BMX Glossary part 2

Flatland
Variety of freestyle riding performed on flat ground as opposed to ramps.

High-Tensile
Steel Less-expensive, heavier form of steel frame material, often found in lower-priced bicycles.

Freestyle
Trick-oriented riding with specialized frame and component designs. Flatland (as the name implies) and vert (on wooden ramps, often shaped like half-pipes) are the two subcategories of freestyle bicycling.

Gussett
Frame reinforcement, generally welded on at high-stress joints.

Pegs
Cylindrical attachments on a BMX bike’s axles used for grinding on ramps and rails and also for standing on for a variety of freestyle tricks.

Threadless
A threadless fork has a smooth, unthreaded top (known as a steerer tube) that allows handlebar stems to be changed more easily than older, threaded forks permitted. Most modern bicycles offer threadless forks, which don’t offer major performance enhancements, but are welcome for those who like to do mechanical work on their bikes themselves.

Vert
Short for vertical, referring to the vertical tops of trick ramps.

BMX Glossary part 1

BMX
The sport developed in California in the late ’60s and early ’70s. Acronym for bicycle motocross, a short sprint race around a dirt track with jumps and bermed turns, ridden on single-geared 20-inch-wheeled bikes.

Chrome-Moly
A lightweight steel alloy named for two of its components, Cromium and Molybednum. The chrome-moly alloy known by the designation 4130 is the most popular variety and the most common frame material among BMX bikes, though lighter aluminum tubing is often found on racing bikes.

Dirt Jumping
Getting airborne on a BMX (or mountain) bike, generally on a specifically designed course, but outside of the racing context.

Dropouts
The rear portion of all bicycle frames, designed to accept the rear wheel’s axle. Large or thick dropouts should accompany BMX bikes, which are meant to withstand the stresses of jumps and torque caused by the use of freestyle (or grinding) pegs.

Cruiser Class
BMX racing class that uses larger 24-inch-diameter wheels. Cruiser class riders tend to be older, bigger racers or parents participating with their kids.

Detangler
Rotor that attaches to the bicycle’s stem and allows the handlebars to be spun a full 360 degrees for tricks without tangling up the brake cables.
